International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

Ozone layer provides protection to Earth and preserve life on the universe. Each year, the 16th September is celebrated as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

In December 1994, the UNO had expressed concern for the diminishing of ozone ‘s layer around the earth. It was decided to fix a day every when the world will get info on the status of the ozone layer. All the members of the UNO would work together to restore the ozone layer around the earth.

On 19th December it was decided that 16th September would be the anniversary for this event. A draft resolution got endorsed for this work and date. Prior to this, the UNO had signed a resolution as the Montreal Protocol to express concern for the substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

Ozone layer is a mixture of gasses that protect the mother earth by forming a natural protection layer around earth’s atmosphere.

This layer lies between 10 to 50KM high above and around  the earth’s surface. The layer keeps the Earth safe from the harmful effects of Ultra Violet rays of the sun. In 1970, it was discovered by a scientist that not only the ozone layer was reducing in thickness but was developing a hole.

In 1985, after the representatives of all the nations got together in Vienna and decided to save this layer from depletion by making a framework or a road map.

Challenges still remain:

Joint efforts and conferences and making serious efforts have produced positive results of protecting the Ozone layer. The layer formation is improving, and the hole is getting filled up. By middle of the century, the layer hole is expected to fill up. The Montreal protocol and Vienna conference helped in making all nations to be aware of the severe problem and working together to save the ozone layer and start filling up the hole.
